Evelyn’s home was built in 2000 and is now home to 60 children. Due to War and the AIDS epidemic there are 1.6 million orphans in Uganda. Many of the children live in large extended families and are cared for by elderly, sick grandparents or other relatives or guardians.

For most of the children this is a very unsatisfactory arrangement as many of these families are unable to meet school fees and the provision of food, clothing and comfort is very poor, often the children are left working in the fields the local brick factory or left caring for younger siblings.

Bruno lived in Kampala, when he was four both his parents died and he was sent to Kamatuuza village to live with a family guardian. The guardian struggled to support him and Bruno was very unhappy. Rachel was able to take him into Evelyn’s Home and he is now a happy and lively little boy, he also received the highest academic marks at school this term.

Evelyn’s Home gives these children a rare opportunity to live in a place of safety and receive a good education. Some of the children are able to return to their guardians during holiday time, but many prefer to stay in the safety and security of Evelyn’s home. Some of the children have no family at all.

When Aran and Esther’s Mother died two years ago their eldest brother had to give up his studies and return home to care for his brother and sister. Rachel was able to take them into Evelyn’s home enabling Edward to continue his university studies and begin to build a good future for himself and his family. These are not unusual stories and Just Care could fill many homes with children in similar circumstances.

The children are cared for in Evelyn’s Home by a house mother and a qualified nurse. The children are individually supported by sponsors in the UK. Many of the sponsors are continuing to support their children into adulthood and therefore new sponsors are always needed for new children brought to Evelyn’s Home. Rachel has responsibility for sponsorship for Evelyn’s Home which costs £18 a month for a child’s accommodation, food, clothes and education.
