Water and Sanitation

Providing clean water and sanitation are two of Uganda ’ s biggest challenges as contaminated water and poor hygiene have significant effects on the nation ’ s already very poor health.

This is proving a difficult and costly problem to solve. As there is no national or local provision and most areas manage as best they can. Many international organisations have spent years trying to find sustainable, cost effective and locally acceptable systems to deal with waste management and Just Care have spent a considerable time examining possible solutions.

However, what we are aware of is that we cannot continue with our current pit latrines. We are hoping to install ‘ ecosan ’ sanitary units on site which will improve the facilities, safeguard our water supply and potentially provide some recycling products!

This system requires daily maintenance and will need manpower to ensure the system is used correctly. This is a big project which is estimated at costing £15,000 to establish, and a local wage to maintain the system. We have some excellent contacts in Uganda which are ready to begin the work, but we are currently seeking sponsorship for this very important project.

Providing fresh, drinkable water is a little easier. A full water survey has recently been undertaken and there is a good uncontaminated source on site. Current estimates of £13,000 suggest that this suitable water source can be accessed and fed to different locations on-site, such as Evelyn’s Home, Tower Schools, The Health Centre and accommodation areas.

Presently the children carry heavy water containers up the hill from the current well on the site. The water survey revealed very high risk levels of e-coli in the well and therefore this is a high priority and we are urgently seeking sponsors for this project. We were also informed that a further £15,000 would enable us to supply the village of 500 people who live across the road from the site with a number of fresh water stands from the same source.

If you think that you or your company could help sponsor any of these high priority projects please contact us and we can put you in contact with our Just Care voluntary supporter who has researched and currently managing this project.

Short and Long Term Goals

Just Care have a large vision for the future in helping the people of Uganda lay good foundations for their future health, educational and economic development. The Directors and Trustees are currently working on a five year vision for Tower Hill, Kamatuuza. It is often difficult to choose how the money our sponsors donate is used as the variety of needs is so great. As we spend more time in Uganda our links with communities and contacts grow and we see and hear of more need and we believe we need a clear strategy to guide in both the sustainability and development of the site and its progress. However projects that have been discussed when sponsorship is available are-:

25 More Places in Evelyn’s Home

We are hoping to adapt some current buildings to accommodate more children into the home.

Employment of Caretaker for the site and Health Centre

Development of an AIDS Outreach Programme

There are many sick and dying people at home often cared for by very young or elderly relatives. We would like to be able to support them in their homes by visiting them and supplying them with some basic comforts. We would hope to be able to provide some basic skills training and health protection and promotion advice to these carers. Our main costs for this programme would be a vehicle and staff. It would be based from the Health Centre.

Employment of Co-ordinator of the Little Boys Basket Programme

Presently one of the school teachers is managing this programme, but as the programme develops we believe it will be necessary to have additional help in buying the food and organising its distribution.

Employment of Medical, Nursing and Ancillary Staff for Health Centre

Development of Café and Gift Shop

Tower Hill Campus, Kamatuuza lies at the side of the only tarmac main road which runs from Kampala to Tanzania. This is a very busy road which is used by many tourists travelling to the white water rafting on the Nile and the Gorilla spotting in the south. It is also ideally placed to attract passing trade by commercial travellers. A small café and souvenir shop would provide employment for some of our older teenagers who are unable to access further study and for local people. It would also provide an ideal outlet for goods made in the vocational training centre.

Development of LLB and Refurbishment of Classrooms at Kiwoomya

Kiwoomya is about five miles from Kamatuuza village and we have been able to give some irregular support to the children and staff at the schools. The needs here are great and the priority here is fresh water. Our friends the ‘Wirral Well-wishers’ are currently raising funds for this well and once this is in place we would hope to find sponsors to support the LLB programme and refurbishment of some of the buildings.

Project Managers

Much of the work that has been achieved has been through the work of our voluntary supporters who give their time, expertise, and holidays.

Peter is the only full time member of staff for Just Care and juggles his work in Uganda and his ministries at home as best he can. Alan McGraa works one day a week managing the accounts, but spends considerably more time with his wife Doreen managing the day to day running of Just Care and the Knaps Programme.

Rachel has recently began to receive a part-time salary for her work managing the orphanage, regular visits to Uganda looking after the teams, managing projects, organising the visits and working alongside Peter filling the containers of aid and visiting churches and groups. As the work grows there seems to be more co-ordination of the projects needed, but again money is needed to employ good efficient staff in Uganda.
