Water and Sanitation

Providing clean water and sanitation are two of Uganda’s biggest challenges as contaminated water and poor hygiene have significant effects on the nation’s already very poor health.

This is proving a difficult and costly problem to solve. As there is no national or local provision and most areas manage as best they can. Many international organisations have spent years trying to find sustainable, cost effective and locally acceptable systems to deal with waste management and Just Care have spent a considerable time examining possible solutions.

However, what we are aware of is that we cannot continue with our current pit latrines. We are hoping to install ‘ecosan’ sanitary units on site which will improve the facilities, safeguard our water supply and potentially provide some recycling products!

This system requires daily maintenance and will need manpower to ensure the system is used correctly. This is a big project which is estimated at costing £15,000 to establish, and a local wage to maintain the system. We have some excellent contacts in Uganda which are ready to begin the work, but we are currently seeking sponsorship for this very important project.

Providing fresh, drinkable water is a little easier. A full water survey has recently been undertaken and there is a good uncontaminated source on site. Current estimates of £13,000 suggest that this suitable water source can be accessed and fed to different locations on-site, such as Evelyn’s Home, Tower Schools, The Health Centre and accommodation areas.

Presently the children carry heavy water containers up the hill from the current well on the site. The water survey revealed very high risk levels of e-coli in the well and therefore this is a high priority and we are urgently seeking sponsors for this project. We were also informed that a further £15,000 would enable us to supply the village of 500 people who live across the road from the site with a number of fresh water stands from the same source.

If you think that you or your company could help sponsor any of these high priority projects please contact us and we can put you in contact with our Just Care voluntary supporter who has researched and currently managing this project.
